it has been 8 months since i've posted on this blog. it kinda feel strange looking back at the old entries... esp the entry where i complained i felt like a old saggy cow in the midst of young grass. and i looked totally fine in that photo entry. real old saggy cow? thats me right now. haha. i guess today is the youngest day ever from now till the future.

last entry, i wrote that its as though the child-like curiosity in me died; the flame of passion put out; my sense of time seemed to have dulled. i still remember that feeling clearly, and i think i can say i sort of am walking out of that phase already? for some reason that i haven't figured out why. fear of the unknown made me try to root myself desperately to existing situation. and situations keep changing but i keep trying to stay in my comfort zone, refusing to let go of anything, refusing to move on, and expecting everyone to stay in my comfort zone bubble with me. that was totally retarded and it made me miserable because i keep expecting everyone/everything to stay status quo. i think it made the people around me uncomfortable as well.

its really miserable trying to hold on, expecting everyone to stop moving on with their lives and stay with me in my comfort bubble, and then getting sad and left behind when everyone just move on, and then getting paranoid about the future. it was a vicious cycle. it made me highly unproductive as well. trying to make my world the same forever is a tedious task that sapped my energy from doing things i would love to do. it sapped me of my curiosity and passions as well.

ok, really cliche, but time really flew by quickly.
somehow, i think, something in me died, and i have spent my days slacking away, moping away miserably.... actually, not.

i don't even feel miserable. my heart became stone. without an ounce of fighting spirit.

if someone pushed me, i would fall without resisting. i didn't care. durh if i fell i'd just lie down. lie low. so that no one would even notice me and think of pushing me.

alright evelyn, i dunno what sucked out ur soul, what killed your emotions, what killed your curiosity for the world, but its time to get into fighting condition again.

Hazy and cold night

Singapore to Hong Kong to Beijing

Yays! I am out of singadamnpore!

The flight to hong kong was full of turbulence.
Once, the plane suddenly dipped really low and I swear I was floating weightless in air for that moment.

As usual, my friends and I developed morbid thoughts.
they said that the purpose of life vests on planes ain’t to save no lives, it’s just to allow the flotation of dead bodies SO that they can find our dead bodies easily.
Provided we are not eaten by sharks, that is. HOHOOHOHO.

And the brace position they asked us to get into if there’s an emergency landing?
That’s just to protect our teeth so that in case of plane crash, bodies can once again be identified by dental records.
Morbid shittes.

As if that wasn’t enough, our plane to Beijing was delayed for an hour in hong kong, because there was a suspicious baggage (stowed right above my seat) left behind by suspicious people who boarded and THEN left the plane.

Morbid thoughts about getting blown into smithereens again.

Anyways, the airport in hk is beautiful.

It was built with ceiling to ground glass panels, so one could admire the majesty of mountains and the land and sea sprawling into the distance.

Unlike Singapore, where the skyline is polluted with HDBs and boring architecture with monotonous signboards, the hongkong skyline at the airport was peppered with fast moving cumulonimbus clouds dancing above the steep mountains in the dusty blue sky.

Then it hit me. I AM OUT OF SINGAPORE!

And then we arrived at Beijing.

The night we arrived, the sky was SO hazy we can’t see beyond a few lamp posts..
I AM IN CHINA!

Day 2:

Hot

Beijing: Peking University: Tiannanmen and Wang Fu Jing and Wu Dao Kou

Lessons started proper!
Toured around campus and found out it was the 2nd most beautiful campus in china.
Beautiful HUGE campus with loads of beautiful historical pavilions and buildings of old China.
Beautiful pond with a frame of draping willows.

The fun only started when we decided to take a bus to Wang Fu Jin on our own.
we were dead lost.

The feeling of being lost… in a city which speaks a language which seemed so familiar yet so distant…
Is frustrating. Yet we push on.
Traveled aimlessly for an hour, and then walked on foot aimlessly and found ourselves at tian nan men!

Amazing!

The majesty of the tall towering structures and wide roads…. And we can still enjoy the vast expanse of sky!
In short, everything is plain big.
You just stand there and go, wow, humans are so small in size.
Then you realize the impressive monuments are works of humans…..which actually accentuates the beauty of the sky and nature, balancing the delicate yin and yang of man and nature.

And when we finally found wang fu jin…

That pretty much explains our hungriness and erm.... un-adventurous-ness?

to make up for it, we all ate scorpions laters from the street side stall.. :P

It was heavily salted and could be compared to a salt drenched french fry….
And then it tasted like crab too… its like chewing on an extra salty little leg of a hermit crab.

Nothing especially gross about the taste…

Anyways, it didn’t occur to me that we were REALLY in CHINESE china all these while because I’ve still been sprouting singlish with my friends.

It was only when we HAD to order food, then I had to communicate in Chinese, that I truly realize that I am in the land of CHINA.
when I was ordering food… my inept Chinese made me feel so foreign I was taken aback.

Day 3:

Disturbingly HOT

Beijing: Peking University: BaDaLing and Ming Tomb

I swear, the great wall is not like any other walled passageway.

It was humungous.
Not only just humungous.
Its frigging steep!!!!
If mountains were difficult to climb, the great wall made it even more unclimbable.

I was dead panting when I’ve reached the fifth tower and I wanted to puke my guts out.
Didn’t take much pictures because I was totally shagged out.
I WILL not succumb to peer pressure to enter self into a race evar.
Stupid shits. Ended looking like dead shagged at the great wall.

But anyways, honestly, its really steep.
And not to mention it’s scorchingly baking hot in the merciless summer sun.
I really wonder how warriors/slaves in the past built and climbed out the great wall with all the armor/loads.
And the steps have already been renovated to be wider.
Can you imagine how jagged and steep and perilous the great wall would have been in the past?
it's a symbol of the collective spirit of the people, sweating blood and dying on the jagged rocks of the great wall for the greater good, ala utilitarian ethics.

We had lunch at some touristy place which provided Gao Liang alcohol for free.
It was like, 54% alcohol.
It was da bomb. Like, beers at most have 6% and vodka 11%?
The alcohol burns the buccal cavity and stings the throat and the favor refuses to go away even after downing other dishes.

Totally tired out, just went back, watched a movie together and snoozed big time.

Beijing: stuck in Peking University

Woke up early for breakfast with jy and the-guy-who-asked-me-why-evelyn-you-are-always-alone-slash-why-evelyn-you-suddenly-have-a lot-of-pimples-yc.

We had xiao long bao on campus.

I was totally expecting to get delicious xiao long bao, filled with succulent juicy pork bits swimming in lard and crunchy chestnut, and neatly wrapped with a pastry skin with 18 folds.

BUT to my dismay! The Beijingers have a different conception of xiao long bao!
It was like dried up xiao rou bao!
*sobs*

Lecture today was in Chinese again.
Boring day with nothing much going on. Mugged mugged mugged.

Day 5:

Beijing: Peking University: taoist temple, buddhist temple, mosque. all of which i cannot remember the name.

Another field trip day.
Spent the day visiting places of worship.

After a while, one can’t help but to notice that all the temples/mosques look alike, with that intricately patterned roof tiles and painted pillars and flowery cornices along the edges of the beams and stone sculptures and etchings.

Not particularly interesting, up till the part where we were released to a shopping district selling ALL the imitation goods.

I bombed $110 sing dollars on gifts for my family.
And I had only changed for $500 sing dollars worth of RMB.
I am screwed. i still have 22 days in china. I have not enough RMB.
And I JUST realized that I SHOULDN’t have bought imitation goods……….. because they dun last! Like, durh!
But they looked so ~~cheap~~ affordable I couldn’t resist it.

Ended up feeling crapped up about impending poverty.

Beijing: Peking University - stuck there mugging the whole day

I am convinced I have been cheated.
The lecture today was ONCE again in Chinese. SO is the lecture notes.
and they said it would be in english. :(

Nothing much again today, another mugging day.

Met a few fellow Singaporeans who were studying there in Peking University and recognized our unmistakable Singaporean accent and Singlish.

Honestly, I still dun have the feeling that I am in China.

I am surrounded by Singaporeans all the time and I can’t feel the Chinese vibes at all.
Maybe because I haven’t got no requirement to speak or write in Chinese in class?
Am I really in China already?

The more we expect places to be vastly different, the more similar things turn out to be.

Day 7:

Beijing: Peking University: forbidden city, 798 art district, tian tan

Visited the Forbidden City today!

Wonderful place, but it’s under renovations and covered with scaffoldings at some portions, which robbed the architectures of its majesty and grandeur.
It was dreadfully crowded.
I didn’t have much mood for photo taking because the wonders of tiled roofs and beautiful pillars and beams had worned off me, what with the over touring of temples and mosques.

However, we took many SMU jump shots.

We then proceeded to 798 art district.
I tell you, the place breathes culture.
The graffiti on the buildings... are awesomely raw and totally unrefined.

We wandered around looking for a restaurant for lunch and stumbled into many cafes and little tea houses which oozed charm and coziness.

There was a glass tea house with a tree growing out of it at the bend of the road, ala the lake house.
Cozy and chill-out with a sophisticated feel. But unfortunately priced waay above our shallow pockets.

In the end, we filed into an artsy fartsy joint which played Jamie Cullum music and sex fetish photography as its main decoration.

At the backyard of the restaurant, there was this huge exhibition area of more sex fetish photography and sculptures and paintings.

I like the vibe of the 798 area.

Its cozy. Its chill out. Its worn out and run down. Its suggestive and sophisticated.
It’s a mishmash of art works, of expressions and beauty.

And then we went to tian tan, which was another majestic place where emperors received their mandate from heaven.

Glorious place which cameras will fail to capture its majesty and the feeling of the land swirling around the sky.

Its something to do with optical illusion of the tiles.

But because of the crowd and limits of camera skills….. no justice is done man.

We might as well just fool around. :P

And then its back to MUG.

Wanted to go to the zoo… But we ended up mugging the whole damn day.

Warm and hazy

Beijing : Mugging in Peking University the whole day again.

mugged till i fell off the bed...

Lecture once again in mandarin.

I’m NOT expecting any English no more.
I have been officially cheated.
Really EMO day.
Everyone’s not feeling happy.
We went out at 9pm for dinner after mugging.

The sky was unexpectedly heavily hazy and the skies were lit red with smoky air.

And the winds were strong.
People on bicycle were riding much faster than usual.
My dad just called yesterday to warn me of funny weather changes going on in China.

I got morbid.

And told friends that I don’t feel good about the weather, what with the red threatening skies and chao ta air.
they agreed.
As we walked down the dusty and dark road, I commented that the worst thing that can happen is to have someone jumping out of the bushes suddenly.
JUST as I’ve said that, the street lamps died.
OMG I screamed my ass off.
And then the street lamps came back on.

Right.

Eerie.

Am going back to mugging now.

Windy and sticky humid = bad hair day

Beijing: Peking University: Yuheyuan aka summer palace, Peking ducks and Peking opera.

our day, once again, begun very early and we were out of bed by 6am.
the sun rises at 4.30am over at beijing, and the curtains weren't thick.
its hard to sleep through the summer sun!

for once, all of us wore our jeans out because the weather prediction sez it would rain.
but it didn't.
the wind was cold and the air was really humid though.
jeans were sticking onto my legs like second skin.- NOT comfy.

at the summer palace, i ran into a chinese dude with a green shirt which had PEACE printed on it.
since i was wearing a green shirt printed with HAPPY, my friends dared me to go up to him and take a picture with him. which i did.

anyways, china is indeed breathing with culture and active senior citizens who pass time dancing, singing, playing cards, calligraphy etc etc.
i look at singapore and my heart cries.

after spending the whole morning trawling around the summer palace - which was reallllllly humungous i really wonder how the empress travelled here from the forbidden city which was really quite far away by foot or by horse - we went for peking duck which was oilily delicious.

and then we went for peking opera which - i can't believe i am saying this - is really entertaining.
they had 3 segments; the first 2 being total rubbish i couldn't really tell whats going on. something about a clam lady finding her clam mother. and some goddess killing the clam mother.
the third was about sun wu kong borrowing the fan from iron fan lady, and it was really fantastic because unlike the previous clammy people, this sun wu kong and iron fan lady had looooooooooads of facial expressions and martial arts move which was really entertaining.

and so spells the end of the day.... and we went back to hostel to prepare for our presentation for the next morning!

Beijing: Peking University : Offprice outside Ximen of Peking University

the day didn't begin too well.
for one, we mugged till 3am and there was only internet connection outside at this particular spot at the garden table under a tree where the persistent mosquitoes were.
thank gawd for NS quality mosquito repellent -which are strong enough to melt plastic!
for two, we woke up at friggin 6am to consolidate. :(

after the presentation, we wanted to go celebrate but we were all emo and in a foul and tired mood so we only went to some dingy shopping mall which sold really fugly clothes which we they tried on for fun because there's nothing to do but we wanted to feel festive anyways.

bright side of the day?
i touched real mahjong tiles and played mahjong the first time in my life! :D

Beijing: Peking University: "best" farm in whole of beijing and prolly china, prof treats to kbox.

woke up at unearthly hours again today for a farm trip.
i was expecting real rural farms.
instead it was this "great" farming/ housing suburb(for ageing city folks) which was meticulously planned by the chinese communist government back then... which was full of erm, propaganda and erm, more propaganda...... which had more empty apartment housing units than real farm crops.

but yeah, the farm food was good and fresh nevertheless.
they grew it more of like, hydroponics than the traditional farming techniques.
sad.

prof treated us to kbox, and it came with free drinks and buffet.
and NO. i'm sorry to say i didn't enjoy it because 1, i cant sing, 2, i honestly can't sing because i know zilch chinese songs, and 3, i can't sing because the english songs available are really oldies and 4, i really cant sing. and therefore had to sit miserably for the entire 2 -3 hours but went to play pool (oh yeah the prof booked an entire kbox suite so there was pool table) and entertain myself.
my first time at k box. HOHO.
but yeah everyone's happy over there so i got infected and was happy too. sort of. ok u get what i mean.

Last day in Beijing: Peking University and 798 art district

we didn't get enough of 798 art district the other day (like 1 hour there for lunch only, hello!!), so we went back there again today after graduating with a peking uni cert and cam whored.
not posting pictures of the art exhibits here.... because of copyright reasons. (like who cares, i'm just lazy)

can't believe that our journey in china is half over! and wasted on mugging!
so totally looking forward to the back packing segment of our adventure! weee~~~

and not to mention...... i only had $400 worth of renminbi... and i still haven't paid for lodgings and transport.......and 11 more days to go...

p.s. i only realized when i got back home that Peking Uni is like, the most kick ass uni in china. omg. if i knew i would have taken more pictures looking studious over there!! me>> ignorant hillbilly. and i also found out that ric's buddy is the president of sg students society in PU. ooooh.

flew to shanghai, turbulent flight, happy to land.

there was this chinese man on the flight, chatting to an angmoh.
both were strangers.
and the chinese started telling the ang moh how to pick up chinese girls.
he said to the man, "just wave your passport, the girls, they will jump on you, you undestand? just wave you passport!"
and i was like -_-"

traffic ain't looking that bad eh?

lurve the shanghai youth hostel. it was reaalllllly clean and neat, great aircon, great curtains which the 4.30am summer sun cannot shine through.
and great guitars, pool table, and fooseball. luuuuuuuurve it.

took train to hangzhou, checked into hostel.
hostel is gross. ok u might call it rugged....
it was made out of wood...the spiral stairs up made of rusting and therefore unsafe metal.. the bathroom was dim and gross... ugh.

strange american backpackers at the inn who pop by saying "ni hao, wo ai ni!"

once done with checking in, we took off to exploring the place.
we rode on rented bikes, wanting to explore the scenic xi hu, and then we realized that no bikes are allowed in the parks around the lake. -_-
and so we cycled around the city area.
we nearly got into an accident though... we = noobs.

and so, we parked our bikes elsewhere, like the typical singaporean with island mentality, our bikes were all huddled together in an island.. :S

didnt get enough of the lake though.. we were too tired by the train ride, i guess....
yeah...

Very humid and warm

Hang Zhou>> Shanghai - Xi Hu and pubbing at Shanghai's bund area.

we hired a boat and reached the landmark ^^ of hangzhou.
thats supposed to warn the village of floods.

when we were there, it was pearl harvesting season.
like, it only happens once in 5 years.
great time to buy pearls. but i was erm..... lacking in cash.... so i didn't buy no pearls.
besides, who knows what is real and what is fake?
i was more fascinated by the clam though.......

that was lunch. hohohohooh. it looks like its desperately crawling out of my plate...

anyways, i had diarrhoea and was in a foul mood.

this picture was taken at xi hu, where there was this pagoda built on the ruins of another pagoda, which legend has it, trapped the white snake spirit in the legend of Bai Se Zhuan. and it is therefore a symbol of oppressed females.

yups.... so after touring the lake proper, we took a train back to shanghai.
and at night, we went to this pub.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmz. i dunno man. i guess i'm not really a pub person. cos lounging around with great music and alcohol just makes me wanna sleep, not high.
but then again, maybe its the diarrhea and travelling which tired me out.

i mean, yeah its beautiful and i thoroughly enjoyed but still... u know... maybe its because i am broke.

Shanghai>> Hongkong>> Shenzhen >> Yang Shuo/guilin

riiiiiiiiight. today is a horribly long day spent travelling and the start of what i feel, real backpacking.
the flight from shanghai to hk took about 2 hours.
from hk to shenzhen took 2 hours.
shenzhen to yangshuo bus ride took 10 hours.

but it was goooood.... in that i finally got my long lost sleeep on the sleeper bus.
first time taking a sleeper bus. and it was kewl! double decker beds in bus!
but the ride was horribly bumpy.
thank god for my motion sickness pills.
doubled the dosage a slept like a log.

and oh. i only had 30 renminbi left in my pocket. that translates to 6 sing dollars.
poverty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i still can't believe how i dared to travel to yangshuo for 3 days with only six dollars!

and we were stranded!!!

cos we didn't know what to do with our laptops and bigger luggages... and we gutsily left it in a locker at some hk train station.

hopes that it'll stay there when we come back from yangshuo!

but anyways, the 10 hour bumpy ride to yang shuo was worth it.
because we left hk seeing this.....

and we woke up to see this!!!

and THIS is when i went YES i am finally in CHINA!!! woots~~

HOT like mad!!!! 36 degrees!!! scorching sun!!!

Yangshuo: Moon mountain, Caving, Mudbath, River Rafting, real farms!

this is positively the best day of my life.

this is the view we get right out of our window.... isn't beautiful?
it gets even better at night.... when we lie on the rooftop and gawk at the stars and moon-bathed mountains surrounding us, basking under the moonlight moontanning. luuuuurve it.

right i will come back and blog about this.
right now i am toooo tired.
but gosh. this. is. what defined my china trip.

we arrived at yangshuo of guilin after an ardous 10 hour bus ride through the night.
honestly, i am amazed that we arrived in one piece, and that the bus did not topple over and get into any accident.

but truly truly, the 10 hours of bumpy bus ride was worth every bit because yangshuo is a truly beautiful place and i hope that when i go to himalayas at the end of this year, it would be just as beautiful. :D or even more beautiful! :DD

once we got out of the bus, we were bombarded with chinese local tour guides, each one being persistent and stalking us to our cheapo backpacker's inn.
in the end, we trusted this singaporean-looking chinese local who could speak english to be our tourguide in yangshuo.
yc was very wary of this tourguide though. because the tourguide was a guy.
he preferred this old auntie local tourguide.
but we out voted yc.

after pottering around and washing up, we went out to have lunch and had MORE locals pestering us, wanting to be our tourguides.
honestly, i dunno what made us trust thomas, our tourguide, because these dodgy tourguides could very well bring us to some godforsaken mountain, rob us and then steal our kidneys, and feed us to the dogs.
but anyways, thomas turned out to be a great tourguide, but we can't help feeling cheated on the 2nd day... which i will elaborate laters.

thomas started the tour by bring us around yangshuo, on bikes...

man, it was super hot. like 36 degrees and the sun burns the skin.
we cycled for a long time before we reached the moon mountain.
but the journey, though burning hot, was worth it because the scenery - the mountains, the naked skies, the vast expanse of padi fields, the uneven village roads, the odd vehicles, the red peeling paint on wooden signboards - was what i was lusting after.

after admiring the moon mountain, we cycled to the water caves... and went caving!
entering the caves was like entering another world.
it was like this submarine ride i once took when i was younger in disneyland.
this was waaay awesome.
we had to lower ourselves onto a bamboo raft, and brace ourselves as we enter the caves so that we wouldn't bump our heads into the precious forming limestone.

p.s. the guy in orange is our tourguide thomas.
when i went to perth's limestone cave on a geography trip.... the limestones weren't as cool as the ones here... i dunno. maybe its the river that ran through the cave which made it so damn cool.

as we entered the cave, the ceiling of the cave became higher and higher, and soon, we were able to get out of the raft and walk in the cave.
the paths were rocky and unstable, plus we had to wear the bath room slippers they provided into the cave, and those flimsy slippers sure didn't help in protecting the feet from the sharp rocks.

but that's besides the point because the cave was really cool. also in the sense that it was really cooling compared to the searing heat outside.

anyways, after ooohing and aaahing at the beautiful rock formations which the locals have imagined to resemble deities and animal gods, we saw a mud pool, the highlight of the cave, and jumped into it though it looked absolutely icky and smelled like pee.
and we could float on the knee height mud pool ala dead sea!

f.y.i. we are NOT naked.

then we climbed deeper into the cave and found a natural water fall!!
we climbed up the rocks and washed off the filthy mud.

anyways, we were all utterly disappointed in yc, who peed in another freshwater pool we were supposed to wash up in.
he was standing, pee position, over the pool we were supposed to wash up in.
and he's not fooling us. he really did it.
-_-" i wonder why i have friends like that.
after that incident, we all un-friended him.

after we got out of the cave, we cycled through the even more rural areas of yangshuo...

his bicycle brake was faulty and he fell into the padi field!

after cycling through the treacherous potholed roads and padi fields, we got to this sparkling clean river and did bamboo rafting.

once we got past the rapids, meishi and i jumped into the river and swam.
it felt damn good.

before we knew it, the sky turned darker and darker....
and it got really creepy as the trees at the river bank fluttered in the wind.
and soon, night fell.
the only illumination we got was from the moon, and the moon light reflected from the river, and it was reallllllly beautiful i swear.

and then the river banks litted up with fireflies!!!!!!!
omg all my life i have never seen live fireflies, flickering in the night.

i could faint with ecstasy.

and omg, we ate snails!

then we got back to the inn.

we chilled out at the rooftop, massaging each other's sore muscles while we basked under the moonlight and stars, surrounded by the silhouette of mountains.
omg. soooooooooooo beautiful.
but it was too dark to take picture with a camera.

and returned from the loo looking very distressed with a roll of toilet paper.

stayed holed up in room until they kicked us out at 12 noon
and then i holed up in a shopping mall and could not buy anything cos i had no more money and had to live off friends like a leech.
in poverty, you know who your friends are.
and thankfully, all of them are. hahahaha.

this was all we had left....

holed up until it was 9pm - time to sleep bus back to shenzhen.

Shenzhen >> Hongkong - mongkok, xin guang da dao, victoria's peak

this is possibly our most poorest day in china.
assuming that the sleeper bus takes us directly to the shenzhen train station which leads to hongkong, we had stupidly nearly spent ALL our RMB.
at least for me, i know i had ZERO RMB left.

and then, we realized when we reached shenzhen that we have to take another bus to the train station.
horrors of horrors.
we dug frantically for money.
each bus ride costs 2 RMB - s$0.40
and i didn't have the money.

we they pooled all our money together and realized... we just HAD exactly enough, and meishi had to give up her special edition 2RMB notes just for me.
sobs. eternally grateful.

and then when we got to hongkong, hp whipped out a 10 RMB note.

blah blah blah we arrived at our mongkok inn...

and obviously we were totally shagged from our 14 houred bus ride - somehow coming back to shenzhen took much longer.
yeah... not much happened.

victoria's peak was beautiful.
so was the madam tussad's .
but overall, nothing beats yangshuo.

BUT OH the food in hk is like. OMG.....!!!!

people in hongkong dress so well even in summer.
honestly, singaporeans can't blame the horrid weather for dressing badly.

oh well.

jumped up in joy today when i spotted krispy kremes, the holy mecca of all doughnuts.
immediately rushed in and bought a dozen of assorted doughnuts from the group pool.

we then went to xin guang da dao to savor the doughnuts...
and would u believe me if i said we shared the doughnuts by passing down the the doughnut and taking a bite at every doughnut?
now that i think about it, shits man, we are crazy and super unhygienic!

and they had fireworks rehearsal for that day cos they gonna celebrate their return to china?
yeah sth like that. not very spectacular.
but the bamboo of hk had interesting lights...

then we went to temple street night market.
its disappointing and should not be mentioned as a place of interest at all.

last day of travel.
feeling extremely reluctant to return to Singapore.

from all these traveling.... what have i learnt about myself and have i changed?
one thing is... i realized that i have been suppressed for a long time and that i haven't been my joyful self for a very long time.
going on the trip away from all responsibilities and expectations helped me find my long lost sanguine self......
and did i like that sanguine self of mine?
while i was 'it', i definitely enjoyed.
but now on hindsight, thinking back on all the things i did and said, it was like another foreign me.
and i am embarrassed at how crappy i was when i am my sanguine self.

i don't know why, that when i am with that group of friends who backpacked with me, that i could be so free and uninhibited, like how i am with my sister and cousin.
i feel like they do not judge me. and i feel accepted.

on the plane back to singapore... i talked to sw about everything... about my fears of returning to singapore and how i don't want to return to the life i had in singapore.
well... i guess she was frustrated listening to me whine throughout the entire trip about things.. and on the plane, she said that i had better do something about it or talk to about it.

but anyways.... now i am adjusted back to the singapore life that i am in singapore already.
and everything doesn't feel that bad anymore.
the world still looks like an oyster to me.
and i did what i felt i had to do and had a talk about it.
whether what i did was right or wrong.... i don't know.
but i'm glad to let it out... i didn't know that it had been simmering in me for so long.
each time i was denied, a little part of hope in me died.
and slowly i had become so dead in hopes i didn't even realized that i no longer had any expectations - which is to say i had given up hoping and not even realized that.
i hoped for nothing and had no expectations but still couldn't even be surprised.
i've gone zen.
or maybe i still have that little shred of hope.... i don't know.

in fact, when i go there these days, i feel strangely out of place.
like i'm an old saggy obasan cow walking through a field of green tender grass.
been yonks since i went to take neo -prints.
wonders if they are still being called neo-prints.

anw, here it is!

am surprised we can still function neoprint machines.

but yeah, the machines these days are so cool. and sooo fun.
lets just say that there are much more nicer looking options and icons etc + better neoprint quality.
the pictures appear blur, because my hands were kinda unsteady when using the camera to take a pict of the prints.

anw, i went sailing on friday!
seasports have always been something i LURVED since teeny boppers days.
used to hang out at sea everyday with sec school mates loitering around the beach.
just bumming around with the sand between our toes, and salty air running through our hair.

i think i spent only an hour out at sea sailing....
and being a first timer with absolutely no knowledge of all the technical sailing terms, i was totally bewildered.
i can't recall much of what happened, but i rmb my instructor saying i'm the blurest sotong he ever taught (like, i'm a total NOOB!!! how am i supposed to know what's a jibe, tag, run, ridge blah etc? but i bet i'll be able to master sailing given more time or briefing or background. hmmph. ) and that i still had a fantastic time nevertheless.

instructor is a second year engine student who haven't sailed for 5 years (because its hard to rent sailboats- n i suspect he's working as instructor just so he could sail... p.s. cos he isn't paid for instructing at all!)
despite him name calling me the blurest sotong evar, he was really nice and patient.

sailing is fun... and confusing at the first trial.
i want to do it again.
some people felt sea sick though.
i tend to get motion sickness, but i felt nary a giddy spell.
must be because i totally LURVE the sea and sailing that i didn't feel it at all.

i only wished that i had mastered all the sea sports at a younger age. baaaah.
then i wouldn't feel so noob.
when i have a kid next time, i'm gonna teach him/her to love the sea as much as i do and let him/her learn all the sea sports!

for the rest of the day, we toured this ceramic town, i forgot whatisitname.

Pu Li Winery and Counting down at taipei101

still having motion sickness when we were on our way down from the mountain.
i 'm lousy.
i was feeling so terrible i cried at the carpark, refusing to step into the car again.
lousy me.

met up with another of my parents' friend at the pu li winery.

mother deng works there.
she gave me this power massage which blew away all my motion sickness :)
but still, i was pale like ghost.

many good wine related foodie there...
but i was too sick to eat anything or drink any of the wine.

then it was time to get back to taipei...

we arrived at taipei around 6pm. after loads of rushing here and we went for a delicious korean bbq meal treated by zhen sui auntie near her place.

the usual side dishes... BIGGER serving and MORE variety than those in SG!

not to mention, FRESHER!

kimchi seafood steamboat. DA bomb. =D~~~~~

THEN we finally went to taipei 101 for the countdown concert!!!

for years, my family always tune in to the countdown concert at taipei 101 on cable tv in singapore.
and NOW we are there!!!!
didn't manage to take pictures cos my daddy didn't trust us with the camera in the crowd.
=(

the 50 000 strong crowd there was....... ho ho HOT.
really hot. in the sense of temperature.
despite the cold weather, everyone was squeezing so close to each other i reckon it was at least 30 degrees standing in the crowd.
im not a mandarin pop person so i hardly knew any song
but what the heck! the atmospehere was great!
and because of the cool dry weather, it wasn't that bad being sandwiched.
and besides, my thick winter clothings helped to cushion the falls. hoho.

then when it was time for the taipei 101 fireworks.... all i can say is that it was magnificent!

i was there!
so close to it!
i could hear it!
it seemed so close i ducked whenever the fireworks appears like its gonna burst in my face.

and then some idiot in the crowd lit a hand held firework next to me and i went deaf for a few minutes.
if u were there and u heard 2 people screaming FUCK YOU at the top of their voice, thats me and my sister.

because of the crowd, we walked back from taipei 101 to yongkang street... man... the entire walk took 1 hour plus.

we were totally shagged.

yeah so the peak of the mountain was 3600m above sea level.
i was really motion sick + altitude sick.
lousy me.

and it was like 0 degrees at the mountain... even the waterfall froze...

at the top of the mountain.
it was really beautiful standing amidst the clouds, expiring mist and shivering in the cold..

and making monkey faces..

it only snow after we descended the mountain.
although we missed the snow, Thank God for that.
the drafts of cold wind seeped into my thick clothings and nearly turned me into a popsicle already...

the pine wood cabin that we stayed in wasn't much of a place to stay in when the temperatures dipped to single digits and less...

i know it doesn't look that cold without the white snow and with the deceivingly warm sun.
trust me.

didn't know my motion sickness was that bad...
anyways, my mum says it was God's blessing that we managed to run into a kind cabbie who offered to drive us up the mountain at a cheap rate cos the bus we planned to take doesn't go high enough into the mountain where we'll be staying.

i was really having bad motion sickness....
the mountain roads were bumpy and swervy and bad for my guts. =(
and the place where we were staying was 2000m above sea level.... horrible.

its the altitude sickness and motion sickness... baaa
btw, the sign reads, NO CHASING AND SITTING ON SHEEP.

we arrived in 台中 and checked into 福华 hotel, which was located in the remotest part of 台中。
although there were 4 of us, there were only 3 beds.
so poor me slept on the floor.... =(

yeah it looks like i'm peeing over the window ledge or sth... =S

shortly after we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by pastor chen.
he was honestly a very warm and gracious host!
he went out of his way all the time to make sure we were comfortable.

he brought us to this vegetarian restaurant, which (duh) sold vegetarian food.
which looks fantastic!

they had these bicycle looking stuffs outside the restaurant....

and i felt like a silly kid... circling the adults... oblivious to the world indulging in my little circles...

then! he brought us to tai chung university, which has the most unique church architecture evar!

he also brought us to a tea house for dinner... which serves fantalicious food and gigantic bubble tea!!!

Taipei, Day 4 - Out w my sis

went to my sisters hostel and attempted to place my bids and check my results for sem 1.
was really anxious and was in a foul mood.
because i knew i would do badly.
sigh.

seems like the trail of bad luck is still following me.
because of the earthquake, the network was down so i could do nothing.
oh well.

went out for lunch with my sister and her 2 bestest buddies at taipei : kaori and johnny!
kaori's a jap majoring in chinese studies, while johnny's a philippino chinese.
apparantly their fav pastime is pigging out and ktv-ing.
am really happy for my sister to have found her flock of birds of the same feather!!
glad to see that she's really really happy over there! =)

johnny's the only other person i know who watches avatar: the last airbender! =)

then we went to wu fen pu to do abit of shopping.
couldn't buy much though. =(
its fucking winter.
and they dun have nice bags either.
and i already have tonnes of accessories from thailand last year so i didn't want to get any more accessories.
and as forementioned, i have big feet..... =(

so all i managed to get was more winterclothings to keep me warm for the trip up the mountain.
my sister bought many many winter coats and jackets though.
they are all so pretty.............. i wished singapore had winter, not rainy season!

Taiwan, Day 3 - Unfortunate day

moved out of hotel and stayed at zheng sui auntie's house at yong kang street, which was right next to the ORIGINAL din tai feng restaurant.

she was an absolutely gracious host, bringing us around to tour the scenic spots, and stuffing us with delicious taiwanese delicacies and getting us silly tropical singaporeans thicker clothings when the temperatures dipped.

at the advice of my sister, we decided to visit the ferris wheel and 淡水.
she didn't join us though; she had classes.

after a round around the ferris wheel, my mum rushed away to do shopping in carrefour.

like she never saw one in singapore before.
she reappeared with 4 impossibly big bags of winter clothings she bought from carrefour.

that pretty much spoilt the mood because its rather stupid to lug huge bags of shopping to a sea side village of 淡水.
my dad got really pissed.
u won't want to know what happens when my dad gets pissed....

my mum smiled at my dad like she could smile all the piss-i-ness away.
my dad threatened to jump into the sea if my mum continued with her illogical spendings.

oh well.
ruined mood.

and so we finally proceeded on our way to 淡水。
just when i thought the day couldn't get any worser, a strange old man sat beside me in the crowded train headed to 淡水.
he was about in his 40s, with white hair all over.
he was dressed in a green windbreaker and flipflops.
that was really strange considering it was freezing winter.
so he sat next to me with a back pack on his lap.

he might be strange, but he surely didn't seem dangerous.
so i was minding my own business when i noticed that he was shaking vigorously.
i turned towards his direction and saw that he was stroking an umbrella knob between his legs hidden behind his backpack.
or so i thought it was an umbrella knob.
so i turned back and and looked straight ahead.

THEN IT OCCURED TO ME THAT IT WAS NO UMBRELLA KNOB.
he was fucking masturbating with his dick out in the public!!!!!!!!!!!
OMFG.
traumatised, i immediately went to look for my dad at the next carriage.
i totally forgot my mum was still there sitting right opposite the pervert.
i hurried back and pulled my mum away to the next carriage.

how bad can the day get!!!!

at least i left before he came.

before we left the train, my mum diaoed him and saw that he was getting tissue to wipe his hands.

then, my sister was telling me the 臭豆腐 in taipei was delicious.

i thought they were all the same.
so i went to eat.

just as we were in the basement shophouse of zhen sui's auntie place, the earthquake occurred.
personally, i didn't feel anything cos i was at the basement.
but apparently, the people at the higher levels felt the tremors.
it was quite bad, as in it lasted for a long time even though the tremors measured on 2-3 on the ritcher's scale.

got back and bathed vigorously and washed my eye with eyedrops.
who knows what germs the pervert has on him?

glad that it was the end of the unfortunate day.

Taiwan, Day 2 -family

christmas wasn't celebrated as a holiday in taiwan.
so its back to work and back to school for all the people in taiwan.

woke up early in the morning and went to visit 表舅and his family.
when my mum mentioned about my cousin who just recently hanged herself, 表舅 and my mum started sobbing.
it wasn't a pleasant sight.

for the rest of the trip, it was like this.
in the sense that my mum would keep talking about pei chien as though she were still alive.

we didnt visit her grave in the end.
guess it was still too painful for 表舅.. to rip open unhealed wounds.

anyways, they ended up taking us to this steamboat joint.
and then there was this 3 hour long awkward conversation with my other cousin.
like, what am i supposed to say to someone i haven't met in 15 years!
especially, how am i supposed to have a conversation in chinese?!

man it was like a pained conversation between chickens and ducks.

anyways, the steamboat joints there are fantastic.
apparently some would give out free flow of haagen daaz or meiji icecream!!!

in the evening, we waited and waited for hours for my sister to arrive at our meeting place.
because her class ended late, we had to wait even longer.
we were all feeling really grumpy because we all missed her so.

and guess what was the first thing she said when she saw us.
KANASAI.

oh well. had dinner as a family for the first time in months!
mum bombarded her with questions and before long, they were quarelling again.
not the fierce type. the joking type.
peppered with loads of kanasai-s.

this rowdy family scene once again became familiar.

was feeling grumpy also because somebody said i looked old.

on the other hand i was glad to be away from singapore over the holiday season.
i always get the holiday blues over christmas and at the end of the year.
i never could see the point of this festive season.

so i arrived in taipei at around 9pm and hurried to a church at taipei for a christmas service.

really traditional church.

was feeling groggy.... had abit of motion sickness.
the church was beautiful nevertheless.

although there was a musical thingy after 11pm, we left at 11pm.
too knocked out tired.

didn't manage to see sister.
sister busy counting down with her taiwanese friends.

sobs.

as forementioned, i wasn't all that excited to go to taiwan, because i was feeling grumpy, and also because i knew i wouldn't be able to shop much.
firstly, because its winter season.
secondly, because i have huge feet i won't be able to get shoes.
thirdly, its winter season.
fourthly, its winter season.

actually... its mostly worrying about cap and all.
gah.
its bad that they plan it such that I have to endure the pain of worrying about my lousy results.

Autumn/ Winter at New Zealand

here's a photolog of my NZ trip!
not gonna post ALL the scenery stuffs... its gonne bore the crap out of ppl.

its strange that when i first arrive there, the scenery is like WOW-OMG-this-cannot-be-real-i-wanna-roll-in-the-grass-beautiful. and then after a few days it becomes omg-grass-and-yawn-sheep-again!?! sianz.

we were supposed to backpack and tour both the southern and northern islands of NZ. but after the impossibly long 12 hour flight over there... we were too exhausted to take another 12hour train down. so we stayed in auckland, a city in northern NZ for a few days.

we arrived there 4am singapore time, 8am NZ time. gosh it was SO COLD. so i dug my luggage while on the road pavement and piled on 2 more layers even as a bra clad angmoh jogged past me. -_-"

so here are the picts we took in auckland :

it would have looked like a wedding portrait if my parents were in those clothes and if the stranger at the back buggered off... no?

my mum screamed at me in public while i took this picture. damn embarrassing. reason? she thinks my photography skills sucks. YUAN WANG AAAAHHHHHHHH........ well that explains the grumpy expressions they've got. its what jetlag does to ppl man.

later on, after a big fat lunch, we reconciled. hmmph.
see that sky scrapper in the background? thats the tallest building they've got there.
sky tower, thats what its called.

and then, we went out to sea.
beautiful scenery, but the photographs can only say that much.
the salty air, the blazing sun, the roaring wind, the jade coloured sea and azure sky...
gotta be there to feel it.

the next day...

we checked out the city... loads of shots of my parents and only one shot of me. =(

oh yeah. while we were here we ran into MR MOO!!! as in MOO. as in ex AHS but now sports school principle. and my mum got so excited she blurted out WU SOON CHANG HELLO!!!! yeah so you guys figured where i got my bimbotic genes from. so anyways, he fu yan-ed and talked awhile with us before muttering about going to some mt roskill annual school exchange thingy and hurried off.

thats my folks getting into another argument. like kids, i tell you.

just when i mentioned they are totally like kids...

and then, we proceeded to go up the mountains.. the rural farmy area of northern islands. more scenery shots and of my kooky parents.

anyway we are up at mount ngongotaha which overlooks the geothermally active lake rotorua.

watch out for my acidic breath!! it kills!!!

and the next day....
we went to agrodome, some rural farm between rotorua and and hamilton.

... and spotted some real weird animals....

went horseback riding and ended with a preettty painful groin area at the end of it.
*ouch*

apprehensive about getting near the horse cos it stinks!!! like ammonia!!!!

here's me riding the horse down the mt ngongotaha. amazing scenery while up the mountain the second time while on horse back... pity i didn't get my camera up!!! DAMN!!!!

my instructor with her stallion nicky, and me on greedy horse jessie which peed like a fountain.

after this, we went to the geothermally active lake rotorua which smells like disgusting rotting eggs.

it looks so tranquil....

but don't be fooled!!!
smell LIKE something died and festered in there!

yeah me too am getting bored... zzz
so thats all!

NZ - nice place to retire in. nice place to challenge nature and do extreme sports.
but unfortunately, was with parents who didn't want to do those sports stuff.

Shopping at Bangkok

dad, usually the guide, totally did not even bother to check out where we'd be going... cos he knows he'll be dragged to shopping spot... after shopping spot... after shopping spot.... no wonder he's grumpy all day. =P

and then there was this very cute elephant brought to the main bustling streets of bangkok.
poor tot.
i wonder how it suvive there.
actually can take photo with it for free....
but i see the poor tot so ke lian so i decided to feed the elephant with tiny bits of sugar cane i bought from the mahat... the elephant's trunk is dripping wet.
ewwwww!!!!!

then it comes to shopping at thailand....

how can we miss the bras?

the lamps sold there is so fascinating.... but house too small. no place to put. so never buy. so wasted.

on the plane back home...

so how especially happy my grumpy dad is now?
